Alastar Woodcourt (born 1116 F.A.) is the commander of the Arbor Wardens and a lord of The Reach. Head of the House of Woodcourt, elevated under his rule, after his father's passing, Alastar is the second eldest of five children. His older sister, Brigid Woodcourt, acts as an advisor to the lord, Derrik Greyfield.

Having been seen as the head of his family since his mother's disappearance sometime after his father's death, Alastar aims to represent his family as studiously as possible. A devout worshiper of Galui Paganism, Alastar is fluent in Galui due to the teachings of his Galuyn mother. The man is often accompanied by several animals of all walks, and is known to have mastered chimaera riding. He was later promoted to the rank of Baron, given the lands of the Barony of the Roost; which encompasses Highroost and the lands surrounding it. Keeping his position in the Arbor Wardens, Alastar became the first of his family to become a lord.

History[]

Alastar is the eldest son of Sir Bashel Woodcourt, a knight that was in service to the House of Greyfield. Landed at the seat of Highroost; the Woodcourt family had long been one of the main protectors of the Greyfields alongside the House of Lancewroth, though the latter was seen as closer to the Greyfields. The Woodcourts traced back to a Galuyn clan that joined with Gilneas following the Second War of Thorns; though which core clan is unknown. As a result, the Woodcourts held to the practices of the Old Ways, which was the closest they could worship to Galui Paganism in the years that followed their clan's joining with the rest of Gilneas.

A proud man of good service, Bashel captured Deidre an Galubaile during a patrol in the Reach, though she eventually wooed the man into releasing her. Rather than escape, Deidre and Bashel entered into a genuine relationship, with the woman effectively abandoning her people in order to join Bashel as his wife. From her were born Brigid, Alastar, Airell, Roslyn and Airic; five children to the Woodcourt name. Bashel, unfortunately however, perished after he was sent by Lord Cail Greyfield to stem banditry bleeding over from The Bite; which had turned to lawlessness during the years following the perceived demise of the House of Grayblade. While he was effective in this role, many bandits targetted him as a result. While out with his son, Airell, Bashel was targeted; where he perished ensuring Airell's survival in the process.

With his father dead, Alastar and his siblings were raised by their mother, who chafed at the idea of a Gilnean life without her husband. At the age of sixteen, Deidre left her family behind; as Brigid was now old enough to raise her siblings at the age of eighteen. Unprepared for such a sudden upheaval of his life, Alastar matured quickly to take on a pseudo-parental role for his siblings, especially Airic who was only seven years old. Alastar took command of his family upon his eighteenth birthday, ruling over the family for a short four years before the Invasion of Gilneas. He, alongside his brother Airell, were attacked by worgen in the woods during the catastrophic outbreak; and were only able to reconvene with their family after the Reach had been besieged by the Horde under the Grimsheer Clan.

Evacuating out of the Reach, Alastar's family were able to make it to The Range without perishing, taking refuge within Gryphonvale for the next few years where they linked back up with Alastar and Airell. Carefully monitoring the matters of the Reach in the west, the Woodcourts eventually resurged to join with their liege family under Derrik Greyfield and the Duchy of the Ashen Coast. From there, Alastar focused on restoring Highroost back to its former glory, doing battle with the Wickers, a faction of Galuyn that had resurged in the aftermath of Gilneas' fall. Due to his service during the First Range Rebellion and Second Range Rebellion, Alastar was swiftly promoted, his family elevated from landed knights to Baron, and given the seat of the Barony of the Roost. In the years that followed, Alastar was a central figure concerning dealings with the Wickers; eventually being granted permission to elevate his guard forces into regional protectors known as the Arbor Wardens. Admiring the foreign Chimaera, Alastar had several imported in as part of an experiment for the wardens, one that proved successful as the chimaeras fit in well with the inclinations of the Reach. Atop these mighty beasts, the Arbor Wardens recruited Gilnean and Galuyn alike; helping to bring some unity into the Reach.

Along the way, Alastar married Leria Enderlain of the House of Enderlain, a noblewoman from the Bite who also had a mixed Gilnean-Galuyn heritage. The two shared a fast love, one that sprouted their children, Bashel II and Celine. Though Alastar remained active in the times that followed, with the downfall of the Wickers and the Wicker King, he began to slow down his involvement with the Blades of Greymane to focus on his family. Reunited with his mother, who had left to Wickenden City; the Woodcourts were uneasily reunited for the first time in a long time. Rather than press the matter; Alastar attempted to mend the wounds that had grown in his family, even if some of the younger members such as Airic were less inclined to care much for Deidre's return.

Alastar lived a quiet life with Leria and his children until the Incursion of the Shadowlands; which saw Leria's familial lands of Seabreeze and Ebonhollow under attack. Rising to the occasion, Leria departed to fight the creatures bleeding in from the Dread Sleuth but did not return, cut down by the forces of Sar'torian. Wracked with grief, Alastar was unable to bring himself to personally avenge his wife, instead focusing on ensuring the Shadowlands forces did not bleed into the Reach. He became more active after several years of mourning, making his first major public appearance at a meeting of the Court of the Coast as they discussed matters concerning the dread wyrm Larelion and his attempts to resurrect himself.
